Understanding Color Formats

Designers and developers work with several color formats daily. Each has strengths depending on the context.

HEX (#RRGGBB)

The most common format in web development. A 6-digit hexadecimal number prefixed with #. Each pair of digits represents red, green, and blue intensity (00-FF). Compact and widely supported, but not human-intuitive for adjusting colors.

RGB (Red, Green, Blue)

Defines a color by its red, green, and blue components (0-255 each). Directly maps to how screens produce color by mixing light. Useful when you need fine control over individual channels.

HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness)

The most human-friendly format. Hue is the color angle (0-360 on the color wheel), saturation is the intensity (0-100%), and lightness is how bright or dark (0-100%). Makes it easy to create color variations — just adjust lightness for shades/tints.
