What Is a Cron Expression?
A cron expression is a string of five fields that defines a schedule for automated tasks. It originated in Unix systems and is now used everywhere — from server maintenance scripts to CI/CD pipelines, cloud functions, and monitoring alerts.
The Five Fields
minute hour day-of-month month day-of-week
- Minute (0-59)
- Hour (0-23)
- Day of Month (1-31)
- Month (1-12)
- Day of Week (0-7, where 0 and 7 are Sunday)
