About Hash Generator & Checker
What It Does
This tool generates cryptographic hashes from text or files using five algorithms simultaneously: MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512. It also lets you verify a file or text against an expected checksum — useful for confirming downloads haven’t been tampered with.
When to Use It
- Verify downloads — check a file’s SHA-256 hash against the publisher’s checksum to confirm integrity
- Compare files — hash two files and compare the outputs to see if they’re identical
- Generate checksums — create hashes for files you distribute so others can verify them
- Development & testing — quickly hash text strings for API testing, database seeding, or debugging
Algorithms
- MD5 — 128-bit, fast but cryptographically broken. Still widely used for file integrity checks.
- SHA-1 — 160-bit, deprecated for security but still referenced in legacy systems and Git.
- SHA-256 — 256-bit, the current standard for security-sensitive applications. Used in TLS, Bitcoin, and package managers.
- SHA-384 — 384-bit truncation of SHA-512. Used in some government and financial standards.
- SHA-512 — 512-bit, strongest hash offered here. Preferred when maximum collision resistance is needed.
Privacy
Everything runs in your browser using the Web Crypto API (for SHA algorithms) and a pure JavaScript implementation (for MD5). Your text and files are never uploaded to any server. There is no backend, no database, and no tracking.
