Image Format Guide
Different image formats serve different purposes. Converting between them lets you use your images everywhere.
Why Convert HEIC to JPG?
iPhones save photos in HEIC format by default (since iOS 11). HEIC produces smaller files than JPEG at the same quality, but many websites, apps, and Windows software don't support it. Converting to JPEG makes your photos universally compatible.
Format Comparison
- JPEG — Universal compatibility. Best for photos. Lossy compression. No transparency.
- PNG — Lossless compression. Supports transparency. Best for screenshots, graphics, logos.
- WebP — Modern format by Google. 25-35% smaller than JPEG at same quality. Supports transparency. Not compatible with all older software.
- HEIC/HEIF — Apple's format. 50% smaller than JPEG. Limited compatibility outside Apple ecosystem.
- AVIF — Newest format. Best compression of all. Growing browser support, limited software support.
- SVG — Vector format. Scales to any size. Not a photo format — used for icons, logos, illustrations.
