What Is Lorem Ipsum?
Lorem ipsum is placeholder text used in design and publishing to fill space where real content will eventually go. It allows designers and developers to focus on layout, typography, and visual hierarchy without being distracted by meaningful content.
History
Lorem ipsum has been the industry standard dummy text since the 1500s, when an unknown printer scrambled a passage from Cicero's "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (45 BC) to create a specimen book. It survived the transition to digital typesetting in the 1960s and remains the default placeholder text in design tools worldwide.
Why Not Just Use Real Text?
- Avoids distraction — Readable English content draws attention to the words instead of the design.
- Realistic text distribution — Lorem ipsum has a roughly normal distribution of letter frequencies, making it look like natural text at a glance.
- Universal convention — Every designer and developer recognizes it instantly as placeholder content.
- No accidental meaning — Random real text might contain inappropriate or misleading content in a client presentation.
When to Use Paragraphs vs. Sentences vs. Words
- Paragraphs — Best for filling blog posts, articles, or long-form content areas.
- Sentences — Ideal for card descriptions, product summaries, or UI labels.
- Words — Perfect for headlines, button text, or short label testing.
